John Gottwald is President and Chief Executive Officer for Tredegar Corporation. He joined Tredegar in 1989 as President and Chief Executive Officer. Prior to his joining Tredegar, he was Vice President – Aluminum, Plastics and Energy for Ethyl Corporation. John joined Ethyl in 1977 as an analyst in the corporate budget department and was named General Manager of the Elk Horn Coal Corporation (an Ethyl subsidiary) two years later.  In 1980, he was elected Executive Vice President of Elk Horn and in 1984, he assumed additional responsibility for Ethyl’s oil and gas operations as General Manager of the Energy Group. He was elected Vice President– Plastics and Energy in 1986 and assumed additional responsi­bility for the Aluminum Group in 1989.

A native of Richmond, John received a BA degree from Washington and Lee University in geology and an MBA from the University of Richmond.  He is an Honorary Trustee at the University of Richmond. John is married to Margaret Newell Gottwald and has four children.
