Robins School of Business' Q-Camp aims to give University of Richmond business majors a leg up in highly competitive job market

March 27, 2009

In arguably the toughest job market in 25 years, the University of Richmond's 12th-ranked Robins School of Business is giving its upcoming grads an advantage in the job hunt.

The Robins School's second Q-Camp -- named in honor of 1986 alumni Paul B. and Anne-Marie Flinn Queally -- will give the students practical, real-world exercises in professional and career skills. Paul Queally suggested the optional training to his alma mater, after observing a general lack of personal business skills among recent college grads arriving for first jobs in New York.

Held off-campus at the Wyndham Virginia Crossings Resort Conference Center, Q-Camp will include two days of workshops March 27-28 led by alumni, executives, Robins faculty and university Career Development Center staff on personal branding, dinner and communication etiquette, maximizing internships and summer employment, networking, presentation skills and dressing for success, among several other topics.

Executives representing Martin Branding Worldwide, Northwestern Mutual Financial Group, Workforce Strategies LLC, KMPG, Spencer Stuart, Genworth Financial and Reynolds Development will give presentations.

The Queallys, both 1986 Phi Beta Kappa graduates of Richmond living in New Canaan, Conn., are long-time benefactors of the university and recently donated $6 million for a 33,000-square-foot addition to the Robins School. To be named Queally Hall, the addition is expected to be completed by the end of 2010.  The couple also has supported several other major projects and programs at Richmond, including the Gottwald Center for the Sciences, athletics and an endowed faculty chair.

Paul Queally, is co-president of the investment firm Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe, which he joined in 1996 as general partner. He served as a Richmond trustee from 2000-07. Anne-Marie Flinn Queally graduated from Richmond summa cum laude with an economics and French double major. She worked as a marketing representative for IBM and budget and financial analyst for Morgan Guaranty Trust before leaving the corporate world to raise the couple's three children.
