Marketing Careers
Marketing is a popular major at the University of Richmond. The following are the different marketing positions, organized in three categories: general marketing positions, positions in marketing communications, and sales positions.
1. General Marketing
Marketing managers are usually have extensive work experience, especially in the case of larger firms. However, with proper training in entry-level positions, graduates can quickly advance up the corporate ladder to the level of marketing manager.
Brand/product managers are responsible for managing a brand or a particular product of the company throughout the product/brand life cycle.
Marketing researchers will benefit from extensive training in statistical methods and in the behavioral sciences. Researchers typically either work for the research department of their firm, or for a marketing research company managing the research process.
2. Marketing Communications
Account executives and supervisors typically work for an advertising agency and are in charge of the day-to-day activities related to a particular account or sets of accounts.
Creative directors are in charge of the creative staff, coordinating the tasks of creative groups, broadcast production, and studio work. These individuals are typically not marketing majors; they tend to major in the liberal arts areas - often in art.
Media planners are in charge of planning how often, where, and when the advertisement will appear in a particular medium.
Media buyers are in charge of space and time media purchases.
Media researchers are marketing researchers specializing in media.
Direct marketing managers are in charge of a company's direct marketing efforts.
Event marketing managers are in charge of marketing particular events, such as sports events, performances, etc..
3. Sales
Many entry-level jobs are in the area of sales: graduates deciding to use sales as a stepping-stone to other careers find that sales are particularly challenging and attractive and choose to remain in this area.
